5 Horror Movie Quotes

It’s our fourth year for a Halloween episode.  The previous episodes covered scary stories in our own way.  Our first version was clearly when we were just getting started Scary HIPAA Stories, then we take you through a terrifying haunted house and last year David tells us all about a horrible nightmare.

Each year it gets more challenging to come up with a plan to make this happen.  This year I tried to come up with costumes to recommend with cybersecurity or HIPAA themes but I ran out of time.  Maybe next year.  Instead, today we have 5 famous horror movie quotes that we tie back to some story that is like a horror movie in the real world.

#1 “They’re here”.  That is Carol Anne’s quote from Poltergeist just after the hand comes out of the TV screen.  The story involves a family that finds out their nice new home may have some secrets the builder is hiding from them.

TDO making more threats and mentioning more medical practices on Twitter.  This group has attacked many businesses and organizations, not just healthcare.  They are being diligently pursued by the FBI, Interpol and many other organizations.  Their antics have gone above and beyond just hacking when they started.

#2 “Here’s Johnny!”.  Plus  “all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy” from The Shining.  Of course, this story is about how ghosts can drive people to homicidal madness.  As it turns out you can’t trust even the one closest to you when they are being influenced by forces you don’t understand.

Vegas doctor who looked up the shooter’s meds and sold the story.

#3 “I do wish we could chat longer, but I’m having an old friend for dinner.”  Hannibal Lecter in Silence of the Lambs saying that means so much more than someone else saying the same thing.

An investigation is required.  Don’t nuke and pave, the hard drive you must save.

#4 “Be afraid. Be very afraid.” from The Fly.  Those tel-pods turn out to not be safe after all.  Even if Seth says there is nothing to be afraid of, she knew better.

All ya gotta do is trust me” security plans.  HIPAA Shmippa.  We don’t have any problems.

#5 “You’re gonna need a bigger boat.”  After one encounter with the giant shark in the first Jaws movie, it was the best one-liner ever.  There is no way that little boat was going to take on that giant fish.  It did work out in the end, sort of.

Anthem breach settlement.  79 million patients, $16 million dollars, 2 year CAP – gonna need a bigger boat to hold all of that!

Next episode we take apart the details of the Anthem settlement to see what we can learn.  As you know, we think those settlement agreements are loaded with the best guidance you can find relating to HIPAA compliance requirements.  The Anthem breach was massive and served as a wake-up call to the industry in many ways.  It will be interesting to see if the massive settlement provides additional impetus for action.

Our horror movie quotes can tie back to scary issues with protecting health information.  It is great to have some fun for Halloween but unfortunately, we get these scary stories far too often to only use them for annual horror stories.  We have to discuss these scary things year round.
